I'm having the same problem. When I click on the basement or pool tool the game crashes to desktop.
1) Remove all outdoor plants and landscaping from your troublesome lot. This means any tree, any flower, any shrub, and any rock that's outdoors.
2) Remove your pool using the sledgehammer tool. Under no circumstance should you click on the pool tool at this point.
3) Save your game.
4) Now test - click on the basement or pool button and see if you crash. If you don't, continue and try to build a basement.
- If you succeed, problem solved. Now simply go back to your problematic save (the original one), remove the same plants, rocks, and pool, build your basement and pool, then re-landscape your house...and save it as a fresh save, just in case.
- If not, reload the game and check if you've missed out a shrub or something. Alternatively, remove ANYTHING that's outdoors and on the ground floor, such as garden lamps or picnic benches. Then save, and test again.
**For the sake of other players experiencing the same problem, I will also list out some of the steps that I've taken over the past few hours while trying to figure out the problem. If the above-listed method DID NOT work for you, then hopefully this list will help narrow down the scope of your search as you look for a solution.**
STEPS TAKEN/STUFF CHECKED:
1) On another forum post somebody mentioned that it could be a problem with the graphic card. I updated mine, but the problem persisted. Others have also noted that updating various drivers did nothing for their problematic game. (Still, it's better to be up-to-date.)
2) I removed my mods, cleared my cache, checked my save files to see if they were corrupted. Nada. To double check on the save files, I loaded the troublesome save, changed household and managed to build a basement in the new house without a problem.
3) I also realized that out of my save files, only the one game using mods seemed to be having trouble. (Two of my games were basically vanilla - I didn't touch them whenever I had mods installed.) To check and see if it was a conflict between mods, I checked my mods by removing them, and then adding them back slowly, bit by bit. After that, I tested by adding my mods to the Sims 3 WA folder instead of the Sims 3 folder under Program Files, but that solved nothing either.
4) At this point I concluded that mods, corrupted files, and graphic cards had nothing to do with the problem, and so the basement/pool crash should be the result of EA doing a sub-par job with their patches. In which case, the problem has to be within the game itself.
5) To try and figure out what was wrong with the lot, I took apart my beautiful house. I removed all the plants, furniture, pool, even the stairs. After which I proceeded to level whatever terrain could be leveled. (The house was still there.) At this point, I could build a basement without crashing, so I went and plunked another copy of the original house in the neighborhood.
6) I redid most of the steps with some variation in several copies of the same house. In one I removed just the pool, but it still crashed. In another, I removed just the plants, but it crashed as well. In house number 5 I removed both pool and plants (and nothing else), and it worked. That's how I arrived at the "solution".
